Quick answer: Ohio does not require a general business license for most businesses. You may still need a vendor's license to collect sales tax, local registrations, and a professional or trade license depending on your industry.

Register your business entity

LLCs and corporations are formed by filing with the Ohio Secretary of State, which you can do online through the Ohio Business Central portal. Sole proprietors operating under a trade name may need to register that name as well. Our guide to choosing the right business entity can help you decide which structure fits.

Vendor's license and sales tax

Businesses that make retail sales of taxable goods or services in Ohio generally need a vendor's license, which is issued through the county auditor and is typically applied for online through the Ohio Business Gateway. Some services are also taxable. Read our guide to charging sales tax in different states for the basics.

Local and employer requirements

Ohio cities and villages commonly levy municipal income tax on business net profits and wages, and some localities have their own zoning or permit rules. Employers must also register for state withholding and unemployment insurance. Federally, you can get an EIN for free at IRS.gov.

Professional and trade licenses

Licensed professions and trades, such as contractors, cosmetologists, health professionals and accountants, are regulated by state boards. Check with the relevant board before you begin operating.
